history : victorian homes : Frank Bartlett House

314 Polk Street / Built 1883
Noted for its architectural significance by the American Architects Association. The view from this nineteenth century French Provincial home is breathtaking.

Built by Frank Bartlett, a merchant and county treasurer, this upper class home was built for $6,000 at the age of twenty-four. Bartlett, originally from Maine was the acting mayor of Port Townsend at the time of the homes construction.
The roof is Mansard style and the home has fourteen rooms. The house has large bedrooms with ceilings that are over twelve feet tall. The fireplace has a marbelized, pressed-iron porcelain clock with bronze ormalu mounts. With "doll house" charm and a pavillion like porch, the house sits atop a steep cliff overlooking downtown.
The house survives remarkably intact and is a tribute to the stylish builders of the time.
